There is an interesting history to share with those wanting to buy Canadian Flags and display the Maple Leaf.
Elizabeth II proclaimed the Canadian flag on January 28, 1965. The flag was then inaugurated on the 15th of February in the same year at an official ceremony that was performed on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. From a temporary flagpole erected in front of the Peace Tower, the Canadian Red Ensign was lowered and the new Maple Leaf Flag was raised. Two years shy of its hundredth birthday, Canada had its own distinct and instantly recognizable flag. February 15th is now celebrated as National Flag of Canada Day. The following words were spoken by Maurice Bourget, Speaker of the Senate, giving the flag an extra air of symbolism: "The flag is the symbol of the nation's unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.”
The Canadian flag has a simple yet clever design that is horizontally symmetric with the width exactly twice the height. The white field is a Canadian pale; a square field bordered by two red vertical bars exactly half its size. The eleven point maple leaf design was re-designed from the original maple leaf by Jacques St. Cyr who was a graphic artist employed by the federal government.
Mr. John Matheson was a Member of Parliament in the Ontario riding of Leeds who was a passionate supporter of a new flag and largely responsible for the genesis of the flag. He was involved in key events that surrounded its creation including leading the 1964 flag committee under Prime Minister Pearson.
Dr. Stanley was the Dean of Arts at the Kingston Royal Military College and brought to the attention the flag of The Royal Military College of Canada to Mr. Matheson which featured the college arms instead of a maple leaf. Dr. Stanley suggested the pattern of the flag with a single red maple leaf on a white field.
